VP Biden loves Cadillac CTS-V, regrets Secret Service won’t let him drive his Corvette. Vice President Joe Biden has held plenty of high-profile jobs in his lifetime, but at his core, he’s a lot like any of us. That’s because he’s a die-hard auto enthusiast with a list of cars to back up his love of the auto.
Car and Driver recently sat down with the VP to talk cars, and it turns out that the life-long politician knows more than a thing or two about autos. Biden, the son of a car salesman, still owns a Goodwood-green 1967 Corvette 327 that he appears to be quite fond of. Unfortunately, the Secret Service won’t let him drive that dreamy Vette; something that Biden says he hates about his job. The VP also talks about his brother’s CTS-V, of which he says he jumped in and laid down some serious rubber while in his driveway. Sounds like something we would do if we had a 1,700-foot driveway.
Biden went on to defend the bailout of GM and Chrysler, and talked up Uncle Sam’s $2 billion in battery technology investments. In fact, Biden claims that in 10 years, batteries will be able to propel a vehicle for 1,000 miles, while weighing as little as a tenth of today’s lithium ion batteries. Sounds good to us. The Cadillac CTS is the cornerstone of the Cadillac product lineup and continues to play a vital role in the renaissance of the brand. The BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class are the primary competitors for the CTS.

The Cadillac CTS Sport Sedan’s signature exterior cues include vertically oriented ‘light pipes,’ horizontal spline lines and a dihedral-shaped hood – characteristic elements of Cadillac’s Art & Science design language that have helped reinvent the brand in the 21st century.
CTS’ athletic form is characterized by sculpted fenders. They feature side air extractors that recall a styling element from Cadillac’s Sixteen concept car; as well as an available UltraView ‘double’ sunroof spanning both the front and rear seats.
Seven-spoke, 17-inch wheels or available nine-spoke, 18-inch wheels surround the CTS’ high-performance brake calipers and rotors. In addition, a summer tire performance package is available on performance and premium trim levels of CTS. For a surprisingly small sum, the laboratories at Lingenfelter Performance Engineering will amplify the 6.2-liter LSA V-8 under the hood of the Cadillac CTS-V from the stock 556 hp to a reality-check 700. Just $11,470 gets you an increase in maximum supercharger boost from 9.0 psi to 14.5, a new camshaft, new fuel injectors, and overhauled heads. Included in the reconstructive surgery are a port and polish, and new valves, springs, and retainers, among other odds and ends. Cadillac is unlikely to honor the warranty on cars that emerge from Lingenfelter’s shop in Decatur, Indiana, which is why the tuner covers the engine and its upgrades with a two-year, 24,000-mile guarantee. (We want to be the guy putting 12,000 miles a year on his 700-hp Caddy.)

While Lingenfelter lists the $1400 Corsa exhaust that was fitted to this siege engine as a separate option, go ahead and consider that a necessary expense. It’s so good we can’t share with you how good it is: Its assault on our audio equipment was so fierce that we couldn’t get a reasonable recording to share. Just imagine the sound of a demon with a pair of V-8s for lungs sucking your eardrums through one of those large-volume straws you get at Burger King. (Easy, right?) At idle, you can practically hear individual combustion events, and the rollicking blub blubblub blub blub already will have the faint of heart reconsidering their decision to strap in. The way the LSA rocks the car at stoplights isn’t a T-Rex-walking-by, muscle-car shimmy, but it’s still a pleasant throwback.

True to its word, Motor Trend has released a follow-up video to its three-way drag race between the Cadillac CTS-V Sportwagon, the Porsche Panamera Turbo and the BMW X6 M, though this isn’t exactly your run-of-the-mill comparison test. Given the quirkiness of the vehicles at hand, MT took all three vehicles out to a dry lake bed for a little fun in the sun.
